10+1 tips for clothing care - how to make clothes last over time?

The purchased garment should last a long time – this has been one of the starting points in founding Gugguun. From day one, the goal in design and production has been that Gugguun clothes should withstand time and use and be passed on, for example, to younger siblings or other close ones when the child outgrows the garment. 

Gugguun clothes are made from high-quality materials and the designs are planned to be durable with various tightening options and rollable cuffs and sleeves. To keep the garment in good condition for as long as possible and to bring joy to many, it must be cared for properly. Fortunately, proper garment care is not difficult. We have gathered ten tips for garment care in this post to ensure the longest possible life for your clothes. 

TOP 10 TIPS FOR GARMENT CARE

1. The absolutely most important thing is to follow the washing instructions found on the care label. Each material has its own requirements for washing, drying, and ironing – by following these, you avoid shrinkage and color changes.

2. Wash multicolored products according to the lightest color. For example, Triple products and printed clothes contain many colors. Wash these garments with clothes in the shade of the garment's lightest color to avoid discoloration of the lighter areas.

3. Consider airing the garment before washing. If the garment smells musty but has no visible stains or dirt, airing it will freshen it up, allowing you to skip the wear-causing wash. You can air the garment outside or put it, for example, in a bag and freeze it for a few hours.

4. Turn clothes inside out before putting them in the laundry basket. Clothes should be washed inside out to minimize wear on the outer surface. When the garment is already inside out in the laundry basket, you don't have to turn clothes inside out when loading the washing machine, making the task faster. 

5. Skip fabric softener. Although fabric softener softens and gives clothes a fresh scent, it weakens the fabric causing pilling. 

6. Shape clothes while damp. When you hang clothes to dry, stretch the garment lightly but firmly lengthwise.

7. Treat wet viscose garments gently. Viscose has weak wet strength, meaning the fiber does not withstand strong stretching when wet. 

8. Avoid washing knitwear made from natural fibers until absolutely necessary. Airing or freezing removes odors, and if there is a stain on the garment, wash only the stained area by hand. If washing is necessary, wash knits by hand (not using the washing machine's hand wash program) in cool water, avoiding unnecessary soaking.

9. If you wish, you can acquire tools for garment care. A clothes brush, lint comb or stone, and adhesive brush refresh the appearance of older clothes. For example, the fur parts of jackets are good to brush after washing to restore their fluffiness. Also, the pom-poms on hats should be brushed regularly.

10. Clean stains immediately. Children's clothes are especially prone to stains - remember to treat the stain as quickly as possible so it doesn't set into the fabric. If an accident happens during play and the garment gets blood on it, soak the garment immediately in cold water. Warm water sets the stain worse.

Remember recycling and repair. If a garment breaks, see if you can fix it yourself or have a professional repair it - if you have a repairable issue with any Gugguu garment, you can send it to us for repair sewing. Clothes that have become too small can easily be circulated through flea markets, online flea markets, or by organizing clothing swaps with friends. Broken and unusable clothes can be recycled by making cleaning cloths from them or by taking them to textile waste.
